Title: Survivre à la chaleur : Adaptons-nous
Abstract: Temperature records and the increasing frequency of extreme climate events are causing significant human losses and extensive destruction of infrastructure, production, and ecosystems. Adapting therefore seems essential. However, adaptation policies are often criticized for diverting efforts and investments that could be better used to reduce CO2 emissions, or even for contributing to the rise in these emissions. Contrary to these views, this book emphasizes that adaptation and mitigation are not opposing forces but rather complementary strategies: adaptation addresses immediate needs and provides local solutions, while mitigation operates over the long term and benefits the entire planet. Drawing on concrete measures—such as air conditioning, urban greening, dikes, and water management—the authors analyze their effectiveness and costs. They also show how public authorities can support these measures to avoid maladaptation and protect the most vulnerable populations. This book offers a compelling case for understanding adaptation not as a failure, but as a source of hope.
